The Story of Rhinoceros Beetle Portrait Artworks
Every summer, my dad would take us hiking in the mountains of central Taiwan. The air was thick with heat, the trees dense and alive, and that was where we first met some of the most unforgettable creatures of my childhood — rhinoceros beetles.
I still remember my dad smiling and saying,
“These are my childhood friends.”
Those words stuck with me.
That simple tradition was passed down to my brother and me. We were instantly fascinated. We would crouch low to the ground together, quietly watching the beetles crawl through the soil, feed on tree sap, and sometimes even wrestle each other with their strong curved horns.
Seeing them again each year became the highlight of our summer — a reunion with our tiny, armoured friends. Over time, these beetles became more than just bugs. They became part of my childhood memory.
Memory is a curious thing. It’s built from many small details layered together.
Even now, I can still smell the damp mountain wood, hear the constant chorus of cicadas, and remember how hot, sweaty, and carefree we were as children, completely absorbed in observing these creatures for hours.
Those days were simple, physical, and full of wonder.
This rhinoceros beetle portrait artwork is my way of holding onto that sweet memory, I love wrapping a ribbon around things that are special.
It’s a tribute to nature, family, and the gifts of life that shape who we become, often before we even realise it.
